Tips for Improved Sleep

Sleep is something that I’ve always looked forward to. At the end of a long day I love being able to come home and reboot for the next day. My schedule tends to change. So to help combat the next days’ unknowns I try my best to keep a few constants in my life. Here are just a few things that I do to help improve my sleep.

White Noise:
I grew up always listening to something while I slept. For the longest time, I used to listen to Enya or classical music while I slept. I mean what kind of 90’s child would I be without Enya? As much as I loved listening to music while I slept I slowly transitioned to white noise when I left for college. One of the first things I bought for my dorm room was a small fan to clip onto my bed.

Now that I’ve graduated undergrad and am in law school and out of the dorms I still sleep with white noise. Now it’s with a much larger ceiling fan. Whether it’s a fan, a white noise machine, or a white noise app, I highly recommend trying one out to block out the excess noise and focus on your own sleep.

Weighted Blankets:
Weighted blankets are my new found love! My amazing boyfriend surprised me a few weeks ago with a weighted blanket. I immediately fell in love with it after sleeping with it for a whole night. It’s like someone is hugging you all night. I’ve noticed that I don’t toss and turn as much with it and now can’t imagine my bed without it.

Soothing Scents:
When I’ve had an especially long day or just want to treat myself a little bit I love adding fresh scents to my linens! For the past few years, I’ve been using a few different scents from Aroma Seize. But every so often I find a new scent I love while exploring my local farmer’s markets or flea markets. You never know what your local small businesses may have that you’ll fall in love with!

But if scents sprayed directly on your pillow isn’t your thing then I recommend trying out an essential oil diffuser such as Vitruvi. It’ll allow you to still be surrounded by soothing scents but in a bit more mellow and longer-lasting way.

Routine:
To help my body start to unwind for bed I’ve noticed that having a routine has helped me a lot. Recently I’ve added Youth to the People to my nighttime routine and have quickly fallen in love with their products. Everything from their line smells so wonderful and makes my skin feel calm and soothed. At the moment I only have their travel-sized bottles but I already know that it is going to have to change soon.

Having a routine helps me unwind for the night. It’s a way for my body to recognize that it needs to start powering down for bed instead of staying up all night. It also helps me reduce my stress. Whether it’s been a long day or not taking just a few minutes to add in some self-care and unwind truly make all the difference.
